If you are using PHP version 5.6.4. In theory, upgrading to PHP 7.x will speed up your site. We can test for PHP compatibility if you’d like before you make the switch. You’d need to contact your host provider or make changes via Cpanel.

It’s critical to update your plugins and WordPress core for security and good site health. But before that, upgrade your server from PHP 5.6.40 to PHP version 7.4. That will speed up the PHP server language by 2X. WordPress core, the plugins, and the Newspaper theme use this programming language. You may have compatibility issues at present. Those slow down websites.

Chron not running properly. This is most likely related to the old PHP version. Chron is a technology to run scheduled tasks on a web server. WordPress comes with a built-in chron. It allows it to perform scheduled tasks. Such as checking for updates, publishing schedule posts, etc. And security checks!

All plugins are loading in 880 milliseconds on PHPv5.6.40.
When you change to PHPv7.3 these will load 2 to 3 times faster. PHP 7.3 doesn’t make your site 3 times faster. It only makes PHP 3X faster. Big difference. Everything else is as slow as it ever was.

PHP 7.3 is about 3x the speed of PHP5.
